06 Mar 2012 SEVERE WEATHER

Tornado season is upon us – are you prepared? Your workplace and your children’s school or day care center have emergency plans; do you have one for your home? Have you discussed with family members what to do in the event of severe weather, power outages, ruptured gas or water mains? Do children know how and when to call 911, a relative or local friend? Do you have a disaster supplies kit? Now is the time to assemble the supplies you might need in an emergency or evacuation. Waiting until something happens is too late to prepare. Think beyond a flashlight and a first aid kit. Necessary items like prescriptions, extra glasses, special items for infants, seniors, or disabled family members should be ready to go. A battery powered radio is a must as well. Your list of necessary items will vary based on your household. The important thing to remember to prepare before an event occurs. For additional information about how to prepare for an emergency contact Sedgwick County Emergency Management at 316-660-5959.

10 Feb 2012 Kansas Gas Service Procedure for Initiating Natural Gas Service

Kansas Gas Service, in cooperation with the Kansas Corporation Commission, is reminding plumbers, who conduct business in the communities served by Kansas Gas Service, of the following restrictions affecting the safe delivery of natural gas. These restrictions also apply to any other workers who install or maintain the customer's natural gas facilities.

All facilities furnished and installed by Kansas Gas Service on the premises of the customer shall be and remain the exclusive property of the Company. All Company-owned facilities on the premises of the customer shall be operated by and maintained by the Company.

A plumber may operate the Company's meter valve to shut off existing authorized natural gas service, facilitate work on customers' natural gas lines or appliances, and restore natural gas service after repairs and testing are completed. However, when the customer's natural gas service is inactive, only the Company or its authorized agent shall operate the Company's meter valve to restore service. This allows Kansas Gas Servie to perform various safety checks and properly record the account activation.

Any unauthorized person who initiates or reconnects an inactive natural gas service, or tampers with the Company's meter or facilities is in violation of this restriction and such tampering shall be considered cause for immediate discontinuation of service by the Company. Any seals placed by the Comapny on meters or regulators shall not be broken or disturbed by anyone other than authorized representatives of Kansas Gas Service.

Thank you for your support and compliance with these important safety-related restrictions.

24 Aug 2011 Eastborough Memorial Benches

From time to time the City of Eastborough is approached by residents who want to leave some sort of memorial to the city in the memory of a Eastborough resident. Unfortunately, we don't always have real opportunities available to properly use these types of donations.

As you are all aware, Eastborough recently added curbs and gutters to the west side streets and completely repaved all those streets. During this construction it was proposed that the city add benches to a number of the "circle parks" found at intersections of streets on the west side.

After examining the situation it was felt the two most likely locations for such benches were the circles on the southwest and northeast corners of the area.

Since the cost of such benches were not included in the original budget for this work, the city council has requested that I contact residents to see if there was any interest on the part of residents in donating these benches as a memorial.

The benches in question would match the benches currently installed at the south side park. They would be set over a concrete pad and would include a 5" x 9" brass plaque identifying the resident in whose name the bench was donated.

The cost of these benches, concrete pads and installation would be approximately $2500. If you have an interest in providing the funds for one of these benches as a memorial or other donation please contact Britt Brown at bmb40@cox.net or 316-685-0858.

04 May 2011 Volunteers Needed for "National Night Out"

It's America's Night Out Against Crime!

The "28th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), is scheduled for Tuesday evening, August 2, 2011. Eastborough will be participating for the second year and we need volunteers to help plan fun activities centered at the Pavilion of our beautiful park.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

We would love to have more participation this year. Last year's event, held on one of the hottest evenings of the year, drew about 25-30 people. We want to plan more activities this year and need some volunteers to help with planning and execution.

NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits our community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.

If you are interested in being involved, please contact Susan Moneypenny at (316) 683-8601 or via email at smoneypenny@cox.net.

Two dumpsters will be placed in the hammerhead east of the Duck Pond Park as last year. The third dumpster will be placed between Brookfield and Stratford along the north end of the island. 23 Mar 2011 Park Update Letter to Eastborough Residents

As many of you know we have been battling the geese and duck population in the new park area for some time. Although we all love them they can be very destructive. For example, they eat the grass around the pond area including adjoining property owner’s lawns. They do their business everywhere which makes it difficult to walk in the area without stepping in something and it causes a health risk. We have also been advised that the water quality in our pond is not good and will probably get worse over time. All of this is a result of too many geese and ducks.

We have been talking to other pond owners as well as the State of Kansas Wildlife Department trying to find an answer to our problem. Without exception, everyone says that the number one problem is FEEDING THE WILDLIFE. They have every reason to stay as long as they continue to get food from well meaning residents or park visitors. In order to limit the population to a manageable number we must stop feeding them! There is enough natural food available for a small number of ducks or geese. The others will not starve; they will merely relocate to another area.
